Jana Nayagan is all set to release on July 23. The film is the much-awaited swansong of Tamil superstar Vijay, releasing just months after the actor took oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu following the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s victory in the state Assembly elections.
Directed by H. Vinoth, the action thriller arrives after a prolonged certification battle with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), making its release one of the most anticipated cinematic events of the year. With massive advance bookings and sky-high expectations, the film is expected to open to record-breaking numbers at the box office.
Despite facing multiple delays and even being leaked online earlier this year, reportedly garnering over 1.20 crore views according to industry trackers, the excitement surrounding Jana Nayagan remains undiminished. The Vijay-starrer is set for a massive release across 2,500 screens in India, with early morning shows beginning at 6 am in several regions, while Tamil Nadu will follow its standard practice of commencing screenings at 9 am.
The film has already amassed around Rs 15.09 crore in India and Rs 30 crore worldwide through advance bookings, including block bookings.
Vijay’s Jana Nayagan is expected to make a thunderous start at the global box office, with early trade estimates pegging its opening-day worldwide gross at around Rs 100 crore. If the projections hold, the H. Vinoth directorial will become the first Indian film of 2026 to cross the Rs 100-crore mark on its opening day worldwide.
According to trade tracker Sacnilk, Jana Nayagan is expected to earn between Rs 80 crore and Rs 100 crore worldwide on its opening day, with the final figures likely to depend on spot bookings and audience word of mouth.
The action-packed entertainer stars Vijay alongside Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Prakash Raj, Gautham Vasudev Menon and Narain.
One of the most interesting aspects of Jana Nayagan is the on-screen face-off between Vijay and Bobby Deol, who share a unique cinematic connection that dates back decades. Bobby headlined the 1998 Bollywood action thriller Soldier, directed by Abbas-Mustan. Released on November 20, 1998, the film emerged as a major box office success and became one of the year’s highest-grossing Hindi films. Eleven years later, Soldier was officially remade in Tamil as Villu (2009), with Vijay stepping into Bobby Deol’s role. Directed by Prabhu Deva and co-starring Nayanthara, Villu marked Vijay’s adaptation of the cult action entertainer. Now, 17 years later, the two actors are finally sharing screen space in Jana Nayagan, with Vijay playing the protagonist and Bobby Deol portraying the main antagonist.

The excitement for Jana Nayagan continues to reach new heights ahead of its release, with PVR INOX revealing that over 2 lakh tickets have already been booked across their theatres. Sharing the milestone on X, the multiplex chain wrote, “The countdown is on, and so are the bookings. 2 lakh tickets have already been booked at PVR INOX. Reflecting on the delay in Jana Nayagan’s release due to the CBFC certification process, director H. Vinoth admitted in his intreivew with Daily Thanthi that the period was extremely challenging for the entire team. “Those were difficult times for me, the producer and everyone in the team. We hardly had any time to fight it out because we were focused on the film’s release more than anything else. There is no point in showing any anger towards the CBFC. One body cannot stop the film,” he said. While acknowledging that the team felt wronged, Vinoth added, “Of course, injustice was done, but we lack evidence.”
Director H. Vinoth also defended Vijay’s decision to remain silent amid the Jana Nayagan piracy controversy, saying the actor deliberately avoided making a public appeal to prevent the issue from being politicised. Explaining his stance, Vinoth said, “I think Vijay sir did not involve himself because it may have diverted the issue and led to criticism. Had Vijay made an appeal, people might have said there are so many problems in the country, including the farmers’ issue. When he did not make an appeal on such matters, why was he doing it now? That could have become the criticism.” He further added, “He (Vijay) was not the chief minister then. These allegations are being made only for political mileage.”
Ahead of Jana Nayagan’s theatrical release, director H. Vinoth firmly rejected allegations that the makers were behind the film’s online leak. The Vijay-starrer had earlier fallen victim to piracy, with the full movie surfacing on torrent websites despite police making a few arrests. Addressing speculation that the leak was orchestrated to generate sympathy ahead of Vijay’s political journey, Vinoth dismissed the claims during a media interaction. As quoted by Daily Thanthi, he said, “A film made on a budget of around ₹400 crore cannot be leaked just like that. Even if such a conspiracy had existed, the authorities would have uncovered it within a matter of hours or days.”
Ahead of Jana Nayagan’s theatrical release, director H. Vinoth admitted to having ‘mixed feelings’ about the film’s journey. Speaking to The Hindu, he said, “I have mixed feelings. On one hand, I am happy that we have received the censor certificate, but also sad that we got an A-certificate. I am happy that the film is releasing, but I am also waiting to see if audiences will come to theatres to watch a film that was leaked. The bookings are strong, so I am hoping that people will support the film.”
Ahead of its grand theatrical release on July 23, the makers of Jana Nayagan turned heads with an eye-catching aerial promotional campaign. A fleet of illuminated flying LED displays and drones lit up the night sky, showcasing Vijay’s image, the film’s title and promotional visuals, creating a spectacular buzz among fans. KVN Productions introduced what it called a first-of-its-kind promotional campaign for the film. Sharing visuals of the spectacular airborne display, the production house wrote, “For the first time ever in cinema… Witness the Flying LED experience for #jananayagan.”
Revealing the scale of the film’s release, producer Venkat K. Narayana shared, “We are planning to release it on around 7,000 to 8,000 screens worldwide. It has been designed as a tribute to Vijay sir’s remarkable journey in cinema.” The producer expressed confidence that the film will serve as a fitting farewell to Vijay’s cinematic legacy before his full-time political career.
Speaking about collaborating with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor Vijay, producer Venkat K. Narayana described Jana Nayagan as a heartfelt tribute to the superstar’s illustrious 33-year career in cinema. “We meet many people in life, but only a few leave a lasting impression. Vijay sir is one of those rare personalities. This film will definitely be a memorable experience for Vijay sir’s fans,” he said.
Producer Venkat K. Narayana has expressed disappointment over Jana Nayagan receiving an ‘A’ certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) while speaking in a promotional video, saying the team had expected a U/A rating for Vijay’s much-awaited film. Emphasising that the action drama carries a strong emotional core and a message of girl child empowerment, Narayana said the film was designed as wholesome family entertainment and would have reached a wider audience with a U/A certificate. Despite the setback, he urged fans to experience the film in theatres, expressing confidence that audiences would connect with its emotional and socially relevant themes.
Ahead of Jana Nayagan’s release, excitement among Vijay’s fans has reached unprecedented levels. Reacting to the film’s advance booking frenzy, X user Vishnu Kamal claimed that the 25th-day celebration show of the film was sold out within just five minutes during the pre-booking phase, even before the movie hit theatres.
