Jana Nayagan Box Office Collection Day 1 Live Update: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor Vijay’s last film Jana Nayagan finally hit theatres on July 23 to mixed reviews. At the box office, however, the movie got off to a promising start.
According to trade tracker Sacnilk, Jana Nayagan delivered a strong opening on Day 1, collecting Rs 42.70 crore net across 13,067 shows in India. The film’s India gross now stands at Rs 50.28 crore, while its overseas gross has reached Rs 30 crore, taking the worldwide gross collection to an impressive Rs 80.28 crore.
On Day 1, the film had an overall theatre occupancy of 68.31% in Tamil language – with morning shows at 73.85%, afternoon shows at 62.46%, evening shows at 63.62%, and night shows at 73.31%.
With a worldwide opening-day collection of Rs 78.27 crore, Jana Nayagan, reportedly made on a budget of over Rs 300 crore, has outperformed Vijay’s previous releases The Greatest of All Time and Leo, which earned Rs 51.39 crore and Rs 75.53 crore, respectively, on Day 1.
While the film has opened strongly at the box office, its critical reception has been divided. An excerpt from SCREEN’s review of Jana Nayagan read, “The first half broadly follows the Bhagavanth Kesari template. Vijay is introduced as a prisoner. An action sequence in a jail establishes his physical dominance. Then comes a lengthy introduction for Bobby Deol’s Phoenix, and this is where the film’s problems begin. Where the film works, and it does work in stretches, is where Vijay is allowed to be himself. There are a handful of elevation moments that land the way they are supposed to, where the background score swells, the crowd erupts, and for a few seconds, the film remembers what it is supposed to be.”
Besides Vijay, Jana Nayagan also features Mamitha Baiju, Bobby Deol and Pooja Hegde. It has been directed by H Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions.

According to a report by Deccan Herald, a Chennai theatre has banned all fan celebrations and mash-up events following alleged vandalism during Jana Nayagan screenings. The decision was reportedly taken after excessive celebrations by Vijay fans led to damage inside the cinema premises. Going forward, the theatre has prohibited activities such as fireworks, confetti, drum performances and other fan events within its premises to ensure a safer and smoother movie-going experience.
X page Cinematica shared that with Jana Nayagan, Thalapathy Vijay now has three Tamil films in the 15 lakh-plus BookMyShow Day 1 ticket sales club, the highest for any actor, while Rajinikanth follows with two.
Trade analyst Ramesh Bala shared that many Thalapathy Vijay fans, including both men and women, were seen breaking down in tears during the first day-first show (FDFS) screenings of Jana Nayagan. “In Jana Nayagan FDFS videos, many Thalapathy Vijay fans (both genders) are crying… As it is his farewell movie.”

Sharing his thoughts on Jana Nayagan, film correspondent Rajasekar wrote on X, “I don’t think neither any film star nor fans would have had the opportunity to watch the farewell film of their stars knowing that it’s their last film. A very rare moment in Indian cinema #jananayagan.”
Film tracker Amutha Bharathi claimed that Jana Nayagan sold an impressive 6.37 lakh tickets on BookMyShow in a single day, with a significant contribution from the film’s Telugu and Hindi versions. Praising Vijay’s star power, the post described him as a “record breaker,” adding that the feat is even more remarkable considering Jana Nayagan faced a six-month release delay and had also been leaked online before its theatrical release.

Vijay’s 2024 film The Greatest of All Time (GOAT) had opened with Rs 44 crore net in India and Rs 99.39 crore worldwide gross. According to early estimates, Jana Nayagan earned Rs 48.27 crore gross in India and Rs 78.27 crore worldwide gross.
Thalapathy Vijay’s mother, Shoba Chandrasekhar, was seen heading to a theatre with her family to celebrate the release of her son’s farewell film, Jana Nayagan.
